The migration of the Dalriada to the West of Scotland
Around the 5th Century, the Dal Riata emigrated from the modern day Antrim to the West of Scotland. After a few skirmishes, they setled in the region and established their power base at Dunadd in Argyle.
The first recorded King of Dalriada was Fergus Mor. He was the grandson of the Irish King of Dalriata Eochaid Muinreamhar. The name Eochaid or Eogan occurs regularly throughout the history of Dalriada until Alpin mac Eochaid fathered the first king of a united Scotland Kenneth mac Alpin who was the direct ancestor of our present day Royal Family.
The last King of Dalriada to also rule in Irish Dalriata was Eochaid III.
The Picts in Scotland inherited through the female line and males normally married into the royal line. A few of the Kings of Dalriada had married Pictish Princesses and this helped to unite the two Kingdoms. Eochaid I married the Pictish Princess Spondana and Kenneth's grandfather Eochaid IV 'The Venomous' married Unuistice or as she was otherwise known, Fergusa the Pictish Princess Royal. This marriage finally allowed Kenneth to become the first King of Scotland.
